How to choose a cable tray finish for Gulf climates

Specifying cable tray for a Gulf project? The finish matters more than the tray itself. Coastal air in the UAE and Saudi Arabia carries high humidity and salinity, and it separates finishes quickly. The wrong finish in the wrong place is how a tray system starts corroding years before it should.
Pre-galvanized: dry indoor runs
Pre-galvanized (mill galvanized) steel is the economical choice, best kept for dry indoor runs — offices, malls and interior risers. Indoors, away from humidity and salt, it does the job at the lowest cost.
Hot-dip galvanized: the outdoor default
Hot-dip galvanized is the default for outdoor and industrial areas. The thicker zinc layer is what survives rooftops, plants and coastal exposure — and because the tray is galvanized after fabrication, cut edges and welds are coated too.
Stainless steel 316: aggressive corrosion
Stainless 316 is for chemical plants, wastewater and food facilities where corrosion is aggressive, not just atmospheric. Where chloride exposure is the problem rather than the weather, coating alone is not the answer.
Aluminum: where weight rules
Aluminum is for runs where weight is the constraint — long spans, rooftops and retrofit structures that cannot take a heavier steel system.
Split the BOQ by area
Most specification problems we see come from one finish being applied to every environment in the building. Splitting the BOQ by area — indoor, outdoor, corrosive — usually saves cost overall, because the expensive finish only goes where it is actually needed.
We manufacture all four finishes in-house and supply tray systems across the Middle East. If you are working through a tray specification, send it over with your BOQ and we will confirm the finish split in writing on your quotation.
